Chocolate Cinnamon Bars

Cinnamon Chocolate Bars

This is one of those desserts where people are like… “Oh, wow! What did you make?”  Translation: “Oh, she only made cookie bars.” (disappointment)  And I’m like, “Oh, just some cinnamon chocolate bars.” And they’re like, “Hmm….that sounds good!” (obvious skeptism) And then they try them and are like, “Mmmmm!!!” Then I smile. Yes, they are just cookie bars. They take no skill to make. But they are SO good, and that is SO a win! Cinnamon Chocolate Bars. Uniquely delicious and a go-to-dessert in my family. Seriously…we all make them, all the time.  The base of this dessert is a buttery, cinnamony cookie bar. Then you take the whites of an egg and paint it across the cookie base that’s been […]

Toddler Easter Books

I am a reading teacher, so our house is kinda obsessed with reading. OK, more like I am obsessed with reading…children’s books. Matt jokes that I haven’t read an adult book, like ever. True. My defending remarks are that I have to read children’s books, because it’s basically my job to talk about and recommend them…so, there.  BUT Julianna really does love books and being read to. We go through a little mini-battle each night that goes something like this: M: Alright Jewels, pick out your two books. J: I’ll pick one and you pick one. OK,  Mommy? (We read two books) J: Read this one, one more time. Please.  M: It’s time for bed.  J: Let’s read this one (hands me another […]

Nine Months Later

I’m back! It has been nine months since my last post, you guys. NINE months. Eeek! Here’s a little recap on what has been going on… -In June we learned that our family would be growing in February. Julianna couldn’t wait to be a big sister! -In July we took a family trip to Florida, knowing very well that morning sickness was surely lurking around the corner.  –It was. I spent much of the summer hanging out on my couch…and the hospital. Hyperemesis Gravidarum is no joke. Apparently less than 3% of women experience it. I am apparently in that 3%, myself and Princess Kate. -In the fall, my sickness started to let up a little and we decided to enjoy a beautiful, […]

Why I Honestly Love Honest

In the past two years, the things that excite me has changed drastically. Once upon a time I’d get excited about vacations or say a delicious dinner out. Today, I’m fessing up that I totally get excited about diapers. Yeeeep, diapers. I still get excited about vacation and date nights, but diapers is something I didn’t really see on the list of things that would excite me, ever. Why do diapers excite me? Easy-The Honest Company. What brought me to the Honest Company? An ad on the side of a blog. Honestly! I really had no idea what I was getting into when I ordered up my first bundle. I just had a little girl, the diapers were cute and […]

Korean Beef

Hey, hey! I am pretty pumped to be sharing this recipe with you today. It’s one of those dishes that I make on a regular basis, yet for some reason I haven’t gotten around to posting it. So here it is: Korean Beef. What’s there to say, other than YUM?! Korean beef over rice is a go-to weeknight dish at our house for two reasons: It’s jam-packed with fresh, bold flavors and it comes together in the amount of time it takes to cook the rice. Dinner in 20 minutes? Yes, please! Well wait, I guess there are actually three reasons… Because even this little munchkin can’t get enough of the stuff. And that’s one big dinner win right there! […]

GF Cranberry Almond Muffin

Cranberry Almond Muffins

I’ve been on this kick where I’ve been trying to limit refined sugar and gluten in my life. This is somewhat hilarious and is certainly not a coincidence to the extreme sugar overdose caused by my last post; Peanut Butter Snickers Cake.   I don’t have any diet restrictions as far as gluten goes, and with that being said I have no problem-o bellying up to good slice of cake, or bowl of pasta, or bun on my burger. However, when something as tasty as this muffin comes along and fills that bread-o-licous need in my life, I’ll take it! Because I’ll be honest, my pants are a whole lot more forgiving when flour (and sugar) is outta the picture. With the pop of fresh cranberries, a zip of […]

Peanut Butter Snickers Cake

Peanut Butter Snickers Cake

I’d like to start by apologzing, because this cake will be your new enemy. Why? Because it will stare at you until you have devoured every…last…morsel.  And then…then you will dwell on the fact that you ate an entire cake. By yourself. And you will most likely feel completely ashamed, because not only did you eat it all…but you’ll want more. It’s fine. I’ve made this cake twice in the past two weeks. In my defense, the first time I made it, it was shared with family. I only had a sliver, I swear. But the second time. Haha, oh the second time. That cake stayed here. If you are like me, once this cake is gone you will likely go […]

Taco Seasoning

DIY Taco Seasoning

My science class has been investigating industrial farming and food, and the kids have selected topics that they’re interested in. I’m pretty sure by the end of it all, I’ll have a classroom full of students looking for organic, free-range, grass-fed, farm raised, non-GMO labels on the food that they eat (sorry parents). Wait. What about skittles, and Doritos, and Little Debbie’s? Yeah-alright. Maybe these lessons are actually impacting me a smidge more than them.  Their arguments are pretty convincing. It’s pretty funny-they (without any persuasion I might add) take the side against the debatable topic. I mean, in all seriousness-we probably all think about it, yet don’t act on it. Guilty! And basically, a week of research and some […]

playdough 11

Toddler/Mom Win: Playdough

After spending a week home with a toddler, I learned very quickly that various forms of entertainment are a must. Most days by the wee hours of 10 a.m. we had rummaged through her entire toy bin, played in her kitchen, read books, colored, put stickers on things, and watched several episodes of Daniel Tiger’s Neighborhood (Thanks, Netflix!). And while I was ready for a nap by 10:30, Julianna waaaaas…not!  Julianna abosultely loved rolling out the dough that we used for our Easter potica, so I figured that playdough would be something fun. When I was little, my playdough was homemade, so it came to me! A genius idea: let’s make and play with playdough! Homemade playdough turned out to […]

Julie’s Potica

Matt’s grandmother, Julie, was known for many things. And a beloved holiday favorite of the family is potica (po-tee-tsa). Potica is a traditional Slovenian nut roll that was often served at holiday or family gatherings.  I absolutely love when recipes have family ties. I am sure that most anyone can think of a certain dish that reminds them of a person or occasion in their family. For Matt, it’s potica. And potica is memories of grandma. Making Potica is most definitely an all day event. From making, and hand-kneading, and rising the dough; to rolling, and filling, and rising again; to finally baking. You will also use nearly every dish and pan in your house. I wish that I had […]
