Potica

Julie’s Potica

Matt’s grandmother, Julie, was known for many things. And a beloved holiday favorite of the family is potica (po-tee-tsa). Potica is a traditional Slovenian nut roll that was often served at holiday or family gatherings.  I absolutely love when recipes have family ties. I am sure that most anyone can think of a certain dish that reminds them of a person or occasion in their family. For Matt, it’s potica. And potica is memories of grandma. Making Potica is most definitely an all day event. From making, and hand-kneading, and rising the dough; to rolling, and filling, and rising again; to finally baking. You will also use nearly every dish and pan in your house. I wish that I had […]

Almond Poppy Seed Cake with Orange Glaze |sneaks and sweets|

Almond Poppy Seed Bread with Orange Glaze

I am definitely a brunch person.  There is just something about that sweet and savory meal combo that makes me feel happy. I think that’s why I love our family’s Easter meal so much. Ham, cheesy potato casserole, waffles, sweet bread. YUM. And today I have a most delightful and easy sweet bread for you to make and take to your brunch table this Easter.  A few weeks ago, our friends brought over an almond poppy seed bread and I’ve been thinking about it ever since. I tried a few versions…ate a lot of bread…and finally settled upon this. I dare say, this is now my favorite sweet bread. And that’s saying something…because I sure love sweet breads. Rather that […]

Managing the Morning Rush

OK, seriously. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to that? For those of you out there that don’t eat breakfast, I don’t know how you do it. I pretty much go to bed thinking about breakfast. I actually pretty much think about my next meal, always. When I wake up, I immediately head to the kitchen because I’m beside myself with hunger. There’s a surprise. Usually this involves several pans, some cracking of eggs, figuring out what to put with it, and washing the dishes. Who has time for that in the morning? I will notoriously rush around in the morning for the sake of a good breakfast. It’s nuts, really. And that’s why I started making this. This has […]

Orange Jam

Orange Jam

I love making jam.  Strawberry jam, blueberry jam, peach jam…I’ve even made garlic jam. I often like to admire my collection of homemade jams and jellies, tucked away neatly in my pantry. Weird, I know. I am fairly confident that if we were ever stranded at our house without food, we could at least live off of the stuff. Ha! Jam is amazing for several reasons. You can serve it along with scrumptious bread and scones for a weekend breakfast. Or on muffins, or between cookies, or as marinade for meat, or…You can also give it away as a homemade gift. If you’re on my list, you usually end up with a jar or two. Those jars usually end up […]

Mother’s Day Brunch

Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mommies out there! This morning we hosted our annual mother’s day brunch. We couldn’t have asked for a more spectacular day. Blue skies, warm air, delicious food, and our mommies. Mother’s day favors for the mommies…beautiful Gerber daisies for beautiful ladies… Story time… This spring, despite my best efforts to encourage her otherwise, a mama birdie decided to build a nest on our front porch. She was quite persistent in her choice. And after a long battle, she won. We have endured several weeks of dodging the swooping mama bird every time we stepped out of our door. Tank has decided to start using an alternative exit for fear of being taken out […]

Avocado and Pear Smoothie

Power Up Breakfast

Hey ya’ll! Avocados have recently been ranking at the top of my favorite foods list. They can be savory, they can be sweet, and they are oh-so creamy. Heeeellloooo you beautiful, versatile, healthy green fruit you. I think this love will surely last-at least for a long while. Especially with a smoothie like this. This feel-super-good-power-start-to-your-morning smoothie is something that I am finding difficult to resist-probably a good thing, seeing how I have a pile of quickly ripening avocados chillin’ on my counter-why, why must they all ripen at once?! I am an old fan of the green smoothie. We drink them. Every. single. morning. OK-except on the weekends when we splurge on breakfast sandwiches and muffins. Regardless-that’s a lot […]

Happy 2015

Day one of 2015. I sit here wondering…How will it ever be possible to top 2014? But bring it on! Because, other than the fact that I will be turning 30 in November, I know we have another exciting year ahead of us. And this year, rather than thinking up a resolution that I will more than likely abandon within a week, I want to make the most of spending quality time with my family-because that’s what matters most. I wanted to kick off the new year with a special little breakfast. But let’s face it. I’ve grown tired of eating massive amounts of holiday foods. Gasp. I know. So here is a recipe that is simple, yet festive and […]

Chocolate Banana Breakfast Casserole-make at night, bake in the morning.

Holiday Breakfast Casserole

There are two things that have me in disbelief: 1. Jewel is eight months old…check out that cuteness: 2. Christmas is just days away. Where, I ask, has the time gone? Nothing quite beats Christmas morning. Snuggling on the couch with a cup of coffee, sporting my new jammies, and opening presents while the 7th run of A Christmas Story plays in the background (accompanied by a few groans of annoyance-Matt-ahem). I live for the 24 hour marathon-even though I have one VHS and three DVDs of the movie. My love of this movie has gone so far, that I even have a legit leg lamp glowing in my window from Thanksgiving to the first of the new year. Classy, […]
