Pumpkin Creme Brulee-a creamy, sweet alternative to pumpkin pie this Thanksgiving

Instead of Pie…

A few weeks ago we went out to dinner with two of our friends, for the first time in foooorever, to celebrate Matt’s birthday. Once upon a time we regularly went out with them to eat at swanky restaurants around our area. But our swanky dining experience has transformed into pizza that Matt picks up on his way home from work. It’s all good-because I don’t mind our new dinnermate, who only cares if her food is pureed. One thing that I sure do miss from our evenings out is ordering up a nice big dish of creme brulee. And one of my favorite places serves it with a whopping, king-sized ginger snap cookie. Let me tell you, that cookie […]

Spiced Pear Cake with Bourbon Caramel Sauce

Lately I have been loving obsessed with rustic, fruit cakes. This obsession is pretty obvious if you have been to my house lately, or at a gathering I attended over the holiday weekend. I don’t know what it is, but I can’t get enough of the stuff. I am going with the fact that these cakes are jam packed with fresh, local fruit. So that instantly makes my cake obsession healthier and more acceptable, right? Right. Oh yea…and I might have added a smidge of bourbon in the deliciously ooey vanilla bean caramel topping…which just makes it…even better! Once you’ve had homemade caramel sauce, you might as well forget ever buying it in a jar at the store again, ever.  […]

Blueberry and Plum Almond Cake

The end of summer is sort of bittersweet, don’t ya think? Warm summer nights, weekend barbeques, trips to the ice cream stand, and evening walks with my family will quickly be coming to an end. Yet at the same time, I get excited for things like end of summer harvests, the changing leaves, and the crisp, fall days ahead. It hardly seems possible that it’s the end of August. I think I finally realized it the other day, when our local produce shop had a sign out for fresh, organic pears, plums, and butternut squash. I’ve been in denial about the week ahead for some time now (only because I will be trading days spent with my little cupcake […]

Rustic Rhubarb Tart

Rustic Rhubarb Tart

I am sure many of you have one…or at least know somebody who does. You know…that huge patch of rhubarb growing in the corner of the garden. To me, the sight of rhubarb poking out of the ground is a sure sign of spring. Rhubarb is fantastic for several reasons…at the top of my list is its resilience to my sometimes poor garden tending skills (watering and weeding can be such a chore). In fact, I am pretty sure Matt has mowed over it several times and it continues to thrive. That’s another reason why I love it…you get a lot of it-which leads to my favorite thing about rhubarb…. Obviously…its ability to be whipped into something sweet and delicious. […]

A Treat for my Sweet

One thing we sure love around this house is peanut butter. Even more so, peanut butter with chocolate. And whoever invented peanut butter Snickers…we probably love them, too. Traditionally, on Valentine’s day I’d whip a batch of good old heart sugar cookies, but this year I decided to change it up and make Matt something a little extra special. Matt had been out of town the entire week for work. And after his flight was cancelled, due to the snowstorm sweeping up the coast, he decided to rent a car and make the long trek home to spend Valentine’s day with his beautiful (and ever so growing) wife…alright, really he just wanted to get home! Can you blame the guy? […]
